Drawing inside the historic house at West Horsley Place is a very special experience, with the huge windows that let in light, casting shadows, exaggerating and distorting forms. It is a place that holds stories, as well as history.
Inspired by the deeply atmospheric interior you will be led through simple mindfulness meditation exercises to awaken the senses and feel more present to the moment. From this relaxed state of being you will practice drawing in response to the space.
In this workshop we will draw primarily with charcoal, a wonderfully expressive medium, that can be rubbed and smudged until things start to dissolve, disappear and reappear, and the space feels mysterious and magical.
Having a 2-day course means you can really get to know the place. On the first day you will explore all the nooks and crannies, making quick pencil drawings as you walk around. You will then be guided through exercises to help you find your own expressive language of marks, making the most of charcoal’s versatility particularly when drawing light and shade, using charcoal, a rag, and an eraser.
By the end of Day 1 you may have started one or 2 longer drawings, which can be developed on Day 2 (or you can start afresh). You may choose to focus on any aspect of the interior including the shapes and shadows of objects and furniture, the patterns and textures of fabrics, and any other details you find as you explore the house. As the day progresses you might like to extend your drawing by adding paper, letting the drawing grow, from room to room, much like the character of the house itself.
You will end the course feeling more connected to your creative self, with several drawings evocative of the time and place, and a general feeling of well-being, as Katie’s approach to drawing is always through meditation and relaxation. Suitable for all. All materials provided. Come prepared to get your hands dirty!
