Drawing by Candlelight at West Horsley Place
Drawing in the dark, by candlelight only, can be a very exciting, liberating experience, allowing you to be totally immersed in the process; sharing the excitement of drawing objects lit only by flickering candles, shapes shifting, shadows forming and moving. Think of sparkling decanters and the reflection in silverware, dark ambiguous spaces in between.
What better place to explore this liminal space than West Horsley Place, in the betwixt and between (the home of BBC Ghosts comedy drama series). A sumptuous still life will be set up in the space for you to work from, lit by candles that will glow with light and enliven the shadows as the daylight fades. We will start the workshop in the mid afternoon, with guided meditation and practical warm ups, working from observation, getting to know the subject, processes and materials. We will be using ink and wax resist, working quickly and fluidly. Enjoy a peaceful evening of drawing with a brush on paper, using the uncertainty of ink and watercolour to reflect the ambiguity of the fading light.
Drawing Interiors at Danny House and Seawhite Studio
Location: Day 1 Danny House, Day 2/3 Seawhite Studio.
Drawing with all your senses, using pencils and coloured pastels, your drawings may be filled with sound, gesture, colour, pattern, details, space and light. We can spend the whole day there, with one to one guidance, and group discussions.
Taking these back to the studio, you will have 2 more days to experiment, scaling up your marks and observations onto A1 and larger sheets and rolls of paper, letting the drawing grow and expand. Let this drawing become a meditation.
Rewild Your Sketchbook
Learn to love the sketchbook, to accept that anything can go in it, and that it is a moveable, changeable feast.
This 2 day course is hosted in the wonderful setting of Creative Beings, Devon - in a garden studio surrounded by colour and nature, for endless visual and sensory inspiration.
Simply Still Life Painting
image - painting by Colette Clegg, student on Simply Still Life 2018
Inspired by the 'Matisse in his Studio’ exhibition, we will be creating simple still life set ups in the studio, bringing a sense of domestic space, though props, objects, fabrics and furniture. The way objects inhabit a space can be so evocative, suggesting something that has, or is about to happen, a half drunk cup, an open book. Still life has also been used by artists as a simple, manageable subject with which to play with much more universal themes, the play of light on forms, the effect of colour and pattern in a composition.
Drawing the Moving Figure
A three-day, intensive and experimental drawing course with 2 tutors, who specialise in drawing and creating inventive processes to encourage fresh ways of looking and creating images.

The walls will be generously covered with rolls of paper and canvas for the atists to work on. Students bring their own paints and brushes, but paper and canvas is all provided.

There will be 3 one hour sessions, with 1 or 2 short breaks. Drawing and Painting In The Garden - A 3 day Drawing and Painting Retreat
This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the gardens at their best. Spend two days making large drawings, and 3 days painting, looking for structure, colour and texture, listening to the sounds. Sketchbooks Into Paint at West Dean
Have you ever wondered how to maintain the freshness of your sketchbooks while making a painting? It’s not enough simply to copy. Instead, the sketchbook itself has to become the subject, a fresh source of inspiration, to be walked through like a landscape, to surprise and inform you, to pick and choose what you want from it. This course is suitable for those with some drawing and painting experience and a basic understanding of their materials, or those willing to experiment from the outset.

Making Room for Drawing
Drawing is spontaneous, immediate and inventive. Drawing thrives on improvisation. Drawing can tell a story, be a record of time. Drawing doesn’t need to be confined to a sketchbook or an A1 piece of paper. Drawing can be on the wall, off the wall, can be a line travelling through space, a mark following edges, a pattern going around corners, a shadow, a space, a shaft of light…. Drawing defines space, with marks on a surface, whether flat or 3 dimensional. Imagine the freedom of having a room just for drawing on and in. This is exactly what this course offers, your own room for drawing.
Embodied Drawing

Teaching is a fundamental part of my life and practice
Teaching is a fundamental part of my life and practice, sharing my own path of personal development with the intention of helping others find theirs. Interwoven with my meditation practice, I bring a unique combination of stillness and listening, along with sensitivity and curiosity when it comes to ideas and materials, awakening the senses through meditation, experimentation and play, in order to create the right conditions and space for creativity to flow.
I also teach occasional face to face workshops at various location, including Seawhite Studio, West Dean College, Sussex Prairie Gardens near Brighton, Hampshire Art Studio near Winchester, Rackham Hall near Storrington and Paddock Studio, Lewes. These can be anything from 1 day to a week, including retreats abroad (Coming soon, news of a fantastic luxury location where I will be running a creative retreat in Spain 2024)
I currently run regular online Drawing and Meditation session on a drop in basis for those interested in exploring the connection between the two practices, or anyone wanting to maintain a regular drawing practice but sometimes find it hard to get going. Using meditation to let go of expectations, and get into the body and breath, out of the mind, drawing comes more easily. After an hour on Zoom, you might find this feeds you the rest of the day/week, or triggers a new project. Or, you might just enjoy a break from everything else and let yourself be guided for an hour.
“I am one who meditates daily but much to my surprise I never brought my practice into my artwork. Everything about your presentations… Katie, have opened up my world and reignited a feeling of hope. I am forever grateful to you for giving me this.”
