Embodied Drawing is an experimental 1-day drawing workshop embracing the physicality of drawing on a large scale - we will be using the body, gesture and sensation as a starting point, as well as taking inspiration from West Horsley Place itself.
Guided by Katie’s holistic approach to drawing, including meditation and movement exercises, you will have the opportunity to experience the scale and faded grandeur of the house as we explore the rooms and corridors, touch the worn surfaces, climb the sweeping staircase, and look out of the huge windows to the expansive landscape beyond; breathing it all in, creating bodily memories.
Taking this experience into the barn space, we will then work on a large scale, drawing from memory, with meditation and movement helping us reconnect with the body and sensations. We will work with charcoal, graphite and other basic drawing materials that can be layered, rubbed out and changed; whether you work in a more abstract, expressive or observational way is your choice.
At the end of the day you may choose to take it away whole, cut it up into smaller pieces, or leave it behind and take away only the experience and the memory. The outcome is perhaps not as important as the process. However, the results may surprise and inspire you in your approach to drawing beyond the course, helping you to discover a fresh way of working.
This course is suitable for all, including beginners, with all materials provided. It is also for anyone wishing to expand their drawing practice and find new limits, beyond the scale of usual drawings, by working large, freely, and involving body and breath.
