Drawing with the Senses on Brighton Beach

  • Atelier by the Sea Kings Arches, Brighton (map)

As the days get warmer, and summer is just around the corner, spend a day by the sea, drawing with your whole body alive and awake to your surroundings. Guided by mindful meditation and some simple movement exercises to heighten your senses, you will be encouraged to draw with all your senses, often with your eyes shut! Open instead your awareness to the sound of the ocean, the taste of salt on your lips, the smell of the sea air, the feel of the wind on your skin or a pebble in your hand. Draw with your eyes shut, without judgement, as you listen to and feel into the space around you. We will take a walk on the beach to breathe it all in and explore, where possible making drawings outside, directly in response to the sensory experience. Back in the studio, we will explore how the memory of sensations stay with us, and experiment with making more drawings based on our experience of the world outside. Your drawings can remain quite abstract, or they might include aspects of the visual. Come without any expectations. This will be an experimental and meditative workshop, suitable for all. You do not need any drawing experience, just a willingness to be curious and open to the process, to draw without judgement, and enjoy a sense of place.

We will be working with charcoal, graphite, coloured pencils, pastels and other basic drawing materials, in an A4 sketchbook. All materials will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own preferred materials and sketchbook if you have one.

Cost: £85 including materials
