Drawing in the dark, by candlelight only, can be a very exciting, liberating experience, allowing you to be totally immersed in the process; sharing the excitement of drawing objects lit only by flickering candles, shapes shifting, shadows forming and moving. Think of sparkling decanters and the reflection in silverware, dark ambiguous spaces in between.
What better place to explore this liminal space than West Horsley Place, in the betwixt and between (the home of BBC Ghosts comedy drama series). A sumptuous still life will be set up in the space for you to work from, lit by candles that will glow with light and enliven the shadows as the daylight fades. We will start the workshop in the mid afternoon, with guided meditation and practical warm ups, working from observation, getting to know the subject, processes and materials. We will be using ink and wax resist, working quickly and fluidly. Enjoy a peaceful evening of drawing with a brush on paper, using the uncertainty of ink and watercolour to reflect the ambiguity of the fading light.
As the light fades into dusk and eventually darkness, we carry on drawing, enjoying the experience of letting go. You can expect to do multiple quick drawings, working in series rather than one finished piece. At the end of the workshop we join together again in the light to share our work, our thoughts, and a warming cup of tea. (Bring your own evening snacks, biscuits and hot drinks will be provided)
