Using ink, pastels, drawing materials, mixed media and some collage, you will be encouraged to play and let loose in long concertina sketchbooks, moving back and forth in them like the tide. You will be gently guided and supported in the space throughout by Katie and Emily. NB. All of your materials, vegetarian food and shared accommodation* are included in the price.
Sketchbooks Into Paint at West Dean
Have you ever wondered how to maintain the freshness of your sketchbooks while making a painting? It’s not enough simply to copy. Instead, the sketchbook itself has to become the subject, a fresh source of inspiration, to be walked through like a landscape, to surprise and inform you, to pick and choose what you want from it. This course is suitable for those with some drawing and painting experience and a basic understanding of their materials, or those willing to experiment from the outset.

In this course you will be working fast and freely from a still life set up in the studio (to which you are invited to contribute) with both drawing and painting materials, and anything in between. You will be encouraged to cut, collage and rethink the composition every now and then throughout the day.

A good time for embracing the weather and moving the body, making large gestural drawings inspired by the energy of this place. It will be a space where you are supported and inspired by the company of other artists. We learn from each other.
Simply Still Life Painting
image - painting by Colette Clegg, student on Simply Still Life 2018
Inspired by the 'Matisse in his Studio’ exhibition, we will be creating simple still life set ups in the studio, bringing a sense of domestic space, though props, objects, fabrics and furniture. The way objects inhabit a space can be so evocative, suggesting something that has, or is about to happen, a half drunk cup, an open book. Still life has also been used by artists as a simple, manageable subject with which to play with much more universal themes, the play of light on forms, the effect of colour and pattern in a composition.
Colour and Texture: Abstract Drawing from Nature
Use rhythmical process to build up marks on large piece of paper, responding to sensation of deep immersion in nature, evoking sounds, smells, view.

Drawing and Meditation at West Horsley Place
Drawing in the winter light is a very special experience, with the low sun casting long shadows, exaggerating and distorting forms. In this workshop we will draw with charcoal using only natural light, into near dusk, when the edges of things start to dissolve and the space feels mysterious and magical.
Dancing and Drawing: An exploratory, interactive creative workshop
Another unique opportunity to make use of the expanse of the Seawhite Studio and the inspiration and motivation from Katie’s particular form of teaching. You do not have to be a dancer! This workshop is suitable for all, for anyone with an open heart and mind, physically able and willing to let go and get messy. Beginners welcome. An ideal gift for a friend or loved one.
Drawing Interiors on a Large Scale
Drawing interiors can be a rich and rewarding subject, full of history and human presence, as well as of architectural interest. Rather than relying on perspective, this course encourages a multi-viewpoint approach, making small studies in situ, from which will come large expressive drawings in the studio.
Markmaking and Meditation
Combining mindfulness meditation with drawing. A retreat style day, with all materials provided, suitable for any level, no expectations. You will be led into the session with an introduction to mindfulness meditation, using body and breath as a focus for your attention, followed by an introduction to the drawing materials you will be using for the day. Making Room for Drawing
Drawing is spontaneous, immediate and inventive. Drawing thrives on improvisation. Drawing can tell a story, be a record of time. Drawing doesn’t need to be confined to a sketchbook or an A1 piece of paper. Drawing can be on the wall, off the wall, can be a line travelling through space, a mark following edges, a pattern going around corners, a shadow, a space, a shaft of light…. Drawing defines space, with marks on a surface, whether flat or 3 dimensional. Imagine the freedom of having a room just for drawing on and in. This is exactly what this course offers, your own room for drawing.

Autumn Trees - Face to Face - NEW DATES
Autumn begins and Nature slows. As a celebratory finale the colours and majestic shapes of Autumn trees illuminate the landscape; often framed with a slate grey or sharp, clear, pale blue sky. The Grass is Greener When You Are Lying Down
A meditation on green: make a series of small experimental compositions in watercolour, gouache and mixed media
In June the Prairie Garden is just beginning to grow into itself, with a sense of emergence, of burgeoning growth. To really see it, let’s get close up, lie down, be like a caterpillar! So many different shades of green, textures of leaves, interlacing. On this creative workshop you will be experimenting with making marks and simple compositions around the theme green; all the subtleties of tone, changes of direction, movement, stages of growth. Daubs of colour, painting with fingers, homemade tools and natural materials.

This exciting course is an intense and unique opportunity to explore colour and gesture in response to the moving figure. Drawing The Figure: An Intensive Experimental Course
A three-day, intensive and experimental drawing course with 2 tutors, who specialise in drawing and creating inventive processes to encourage fresh ways of looking and creating images. Emily and Katie share their love of drawing as a process of exploration and discovery. This exciting course is a wonderful and unique opportunity for artists to explore the breadth and depth of drawing: working with charcoal, ink, simple animation, collage, installation, working on both very large and small scale, different surfaces and in collaboration with the model and other the artists.
Pattern and Texture at West Horsley Place
Come and explore the manor house in intimate detail, seeking out pattern and textiles, to inspire a large scale abstract drawing. Making initial small drawings with pen and pencil on paper, you will then be given a guided approach to start a larger drawing, using pattern and repetition to create a ‘tapestry' of marks. Developing a rich textured surface by layering rhythmical marks, ‘weaving’ back and forth, rubbing out as much as drawing in.
Drawing with charcoal and coloured pastels you will create a textural, abstract drawing, inspired by the fabrics and patterns found around the house.
POETRY AND POSE
Drawing from the figure, in a unique experimental workshop where you and the life model exchange energy and let the drawings flow like a stream of consciousness poem. Life drawing is about rhythm, flow, the lyrical line, grace, balance and composition. The same could be said about poetry. Katrina, our model, is a performing poet. She will read her own poems about movement and the body to inspire the drawings. She will improvise in response to the poses and your drawings. You will draw in response to her words as well as the poses. Let the rhythm of words and the model’s movements inspire movement in your drawings. This will be a conversation, back and forth, as the drawings become poetry, and the poetry becomes drawing, bringing things to life on the page.
Movement, Marks and Meditation at Atelier by the Sea, Brighton
Join me for a one-day session in expressive and experimental drawing using ink and sea water inspired by the energy of the ocean.
Spend a day in our studio making a series of quick small studies taking inspiration from whatever you experience on the beach. Being this close to the sea, you cannot help being affected by the proximity and power of water.
Chichester Cathedral: Drawing Sound, Space and Light
Drawing with all your senses, using pencils and coloured pastels in the cathedral itself, you will be encouraged to make expressive and experimental studies on a small scale as you directly experience the immensity of the building.
Your drawings may be filled with gesture, colour, sound, the cool air, the touch of stone, the echoes of footsteps and organ music…. We can spend the whole day there, with one to one guidance, and group discussions about how we tackle such an enormous subject. Taking these back to the studio, you will have 2 more days to experiment, scaling up your marks and observations onto large rolls of paper, letting the drawing grow and expand, as if you were the architect and builder constructing it in space.
Making Room For Drawing
Imagine the freedom of having a room just for drawing on and in. This is exactly what this course offers, your own room for drawing. You will each have a rudimentary framework space in the stu-dio, in which to create your very own artists den - constructing (and eventually deconstructing) a 3 dimensional space around you upon which to draw - on the walls, on the floors, over under through. You will create a magical space where anything can happen, where you can draw around shadows, make windows to look through, and project images from your inner and outer worlds.
Drawing By Candlelight at the Paddock Studio, Lewes
Drawing with ink and watercolour by candlelight in the intimate space of the Paddock Studio in Lewes, a peaceful evening of drawing from a simple still life, with a brush on paper, using the uncertainty of watercolour to reflect the ambiguity of the fading light.
Expressive Painting: Figure, Fashion and Fabrics
A 3 day course in the Seawhite Studio painting from the clothed figure, inspired by colour and pattern as much as form and flesh. Celebrate the way fabric adorns the figure, how pattern changes as it wraps around form, glimpses of flesh, the features of the face emerging from folds and frills. Cost £330
Teaching is a fundamental part of my life and practice
Teaching is a fundamental part of my life and practice, sharing my own path of personal development with the intention of helping others find theirs. Interwoven with my meditation practice, I bring a unique combination of stillness and listening, along with sensitivity and curiosity when it comes to ideas and materials, awakening the senses through meditation, experimentation and play, in order to create the right conditions and space for creativity to flow.
I also teach occasional face to face workshops at various location, including Seawhite Studio, West Dean College, Sussex Prairie Gardens near Brighton, Hampshire Art Studio near Winchester, Rackham Hall near Storrington and Paddock Studio, Lewes. These can be anything from 1 day to a week, including retreats abroad (Coming soon, news of a fantastic luxury location where I will be running a creative retreat in Spain 2024)
I currently run regular online Drawing and Meditation session on a drop in basis for those interested in exploring the connection between the two practices, or anyone wanting to maintain a regular drawing practice but sometimes find it hard to get going. Using meditation to let go of expectations, and get into the body and breath, out of the mind, drawing comes more easily. After an hour on Zoom, you might find this feeds you the rest of the day/week, or triggers a new project. Or, you might just enjoy a break from everything else and let yourself be guided for an hour.
“I am one who meditates daily but much to my surprise I never brought my practice into my artwork. Everything about your presentations… Katie, have opened up my world and reignited a feeling of hope. I am forever grateful to you for giving me this.”
— Linda S USA 2023
